Growl, Grrr...

Growl is a preference to make Mac OS X applications let you know when stuff happens. Windows, whenever you use it, barrages you with lots of annoying messages in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Your computer's anti-virus software is not-up-date. There are updates ready for your computer. Your computer is not connected to such-and-such network. Some software on your computer - we're not going to name names, but it rhymes with "lava" - has updates ready. There are unused icons on your Destop. Your screen resolution is low. And so on. And so on.

Growl brings this "feature" to Mac OS X.

We're still not sure what we think about Growl. We're leaning towards negative, but our governor in his drive to deny intelligent discourse, or at least reportage, two things he would not understand even if he Googled them for definitions, is trying his darndest to kill public broadcasting in this state, and because we like public broadcasting we're feeling cranky.

But we digress.

About Growl: A lot of Mac OS X software developers seem to like it. We'll continue disabling it, and we'll give you an update later.

It would be great if Mac OS X software developers would all use use Sparkle. It's not annoying. It's actually pretty helpful.
